I am aware of the symptoms of a stroke, but what does a stroke actually feel like, if it has any feeling at all?

When I had a stroke, the initial sensation (before my right side became paralyzed) was that my arm and leg became so heavy that it took an incredible effort to lift them. The right side of my face, especially my lips, became numb and tingly (pins and needles sensation).

Like having your head very slowly run over by every tire on an 18 wheeler. I also had pain in my left arm... I thought I was having a heart attack ~ that was the affected side and is now the arm I have no functional use of. Vomiting is also very common during a stroke.

My husband had a stroke almost 7 weeks ago. He is paralyzed on his right side and cant speak. For the last 1-2 weeks he indicates his right arm hurts. If it is accidentally bumped or moved even slightly he jumps or cries out.

His doctor has checked it and doesnt see anything physically wrong with it. I was wondering if any of the survivors in the forum could give me any ideas re what this pain is, how i might help alleviate it, etc. thanks - Kp

So you see from these various replies, that it can be very painful, or not painful at all, perhaps with just some numbness.

Mine began as a very sudden painful headache for a brief time, followed by two days in the hospital of intense nausea and vomiting, followed by--no pain at all, just numbness and other annoying but not painful symptoms. My stroke left no paralysis, and is considered mild.

Maybe I'm not meant to reply - this is my third attempt to post. Now watch all three attempts post!

I'll make it shorter this time! I had no pain at any time. "Startled" describes my first response - startled that it happened so suddenly, startled that I had no warning, at least right then. In fact, I felt great, and was doing nothing more strenuous than feeding/talking to the cat.

First, my speech slurred. I said something to the cat, and thought "That didn't sound right." so I said it again, and listened to myself speak. I sounded like an old record being played on slow speed. When I tried to tell my son, Wayne, something was wrong, it came out "Ain, sumhin ong. Toke ot art. All ine un un." He said I was staggering which I didn't notice. Then my left side felt weak. My thought processes weren't interrupted. I was able to determine these were not heart attack symptoms, but were stroke symptoms. (toke ot art)

It was over very quickly, before EMTs arrived, except for weakness and ongoing paralysis of left thumb and index finger - which I'm assured will probably resolve since this was a mild stroke. Also, I've added Aggrenox to the meds I take, and now have terrible headaches until my body adjusts to it.

Like some of you, I also had no pain. I couldn't read things correctly and was having a hard time understanding CNN that morning (which I guess isn't such a bad thing :) ). My husband was concerned, but left for work. Something just didn't feel right.

I called him and asked him to come home. Within ten minutes after his coming home, the left side went flaccid and my speech was slurring. At 29, I could not believe it happened to me . . .

Hi,
Your stroke sounds similar to mine. I had a stroke Jan. 15th this year. I have fully recovered, but wake up during the night with numbness in my arm and hand. Do you have this problem?

I was on stage playing with a bluegrass band when I had a cerebral hemorrhage. (This was in 1991.) It wasn't painful, but in a split second everything changed. Within 10 minutes I couldn't walk or talk, so it's a good thing I was sitting down. There was a doctor in the audience who asked me if my head hurt, and I indicated yes. I don't remember it hurting, but a band member says that it did. By the time the ambulance arrived I was unconscious. I was in a coma for 3 weeks. I remember it as if it were yesterday, but some memories are false (like my head not hurting). Beth

the first symptom i had was a dramatic reduction in my field of vision.
i felt a little off balance and couldn't see the phone book well enough to find the number for a cab taxi cab, i needed to get to an appointment andi felt to off balance to walk the mile.
i called 911 instead of a cab
.i could walk when i got to hospital but came out of rehab two months later in a wheelchair.

I was in the process of moving. Was taking a break riding in a truck to deliver more stuff to new place.I told my friends I just don't feel good. The I was dizzy, almost had a scared feeling. The weakness was there but I just put my head down and closed my eyes.I was seeing mixed up anyway. One friend asked what was wrong and I said I don't just know instead of I just don't know. The only speech thing involved. No pain, confusion and scared.

Hi,

I had my stroke Oct. 1, 2002. I got up one morning to get ready to go to work. I only noticed that the fingers on my right hand, were a little numb. I thought they maybe feel asleep. I ignored the symptom for several hours, never dreaming it was a stroke. I never had nor do I now have pain.

When I walked into the ER, they took my blood pressure, and told me I may be having a stroke.

Hey Pollert

My left side was affected and I know the pain he may be referring to....Mine is more like a bad cramp pain and it starts in my elbow, down my forearm to my hand where it is numb anyway. If I try to touch my nose quickly, I slug myself.
When I articulated this to my therepist and Neuorologist, I was told my muscle tone had gone awry....I also have tremors..
You may want to google "muscle tone after a stroke" and see if it jives...Adios

Hi,
I kind of had that feeling in the beginning in the leg. When sitting and trying to kick the heel of my foot on the floor, I would get an uncontrolled jumping effect with the foot.

I overcame this, don't get in anymore, by strengthening the leg muscles on a leg press machine, and building the tone. Please try the same with your arm.

If you build the strength in the arm, the tone will come back. Doctors don't know everything, we the survivors can talk from experience. If you want some tips, exercises you can do at home, for both the leg and arm, write me at:
madfit@optonline.net.
Keep trying.
Madeline

Hi,
Here are some tips:

1. Use the squeeze ball method to gain strength, while watching TV, in a car, etc.

2. With the affected hand, pull the fingers on the opposite hand, one at a time, and keep stretching them out. Stretch each joint on the finger, the 3 joints on every finger. I constantly did this. My hand used to be like a claw. You should see it now. I am even touch typing this note using every finger on both hands. It takes a strong will, perseverance and a lot of work.

Take the good hand and pull on the thumb stetching it, farther and farther from the index finger. After a while, you'll notice you can separate the thumb from the index finger until it is normal like your good hand.

3. Then when you have accomplished this, just try opening and closing the fingers, over and over until they become strong.

4. Use a tight springed clothes pin, and keep pressing it open, this will also give strength to the fingers.

5. Put some small type shaped pasta or marbles in a bowl and try picking one at a time up. This gives coordination.

6. Did they give you puddy in therapy? That was also good to build strength.

7. Stengthen your whole arm including your fingers, by taking a plastic grocery bag and put a few groceries, adding more and more weight when you think you can. You'll be surprised, by carrying the bag with 2 or 3 fingers, you'll see how strong both the fingers and arm become.

8. It's very important to do exercises all the time. Just relaxing in bed, sitting in a chair or anyplace. I even used to do this when someone took my by car shopping, after a while it will be instinctive. I can personally attest to these exercises helping.
Hope this helps you! Good luck.

Hi, I was just reading the postings to the this forum and noticed that you had a stroke at age 29 in December of 2005. How are you doing now? My daughter is 29 and had a stroke May 26, 2006. She would desparately like to be able to converse with someone her age who has experienced a stroke. She had a blood clot that when to the left side of her brain and affected her right side.

Thanks!

Feel of a Stroke ; 9/4/05: a collapsing feeling, no pain , a little dizziness. Un like anything I ever felt. I was 2 lurches away from the bed and phone, so I dialed 911, tell them you think its a stroke. Good news over a year later; just alittle left side weakness. What I would like to find out is about the fatigure that rides all the time sometimes so intense I must nap. Some times 2 naps a day, but otherwise I can drive, do laundry and bills. Excercised by drumming my fingers of left hand like you do when bored. It imbered up hand and fingers. And I thought that up myself. Take heart, excercise, it gets better.

Hi. My name is Richard Gosselin.
Two days ago i had a realy sharp pain in my head it felt like a vein burst and i was wondering if this could posibly be a stroke because i went to the doctor and they said that it would most likely be a mygrain(not sure n the spelling) ( I dont think this is to be the problem. How do i go about getting a second and/or third opinion. because the doctor didn't listen to me at all when i was in the hospital. It was almost as if he didn't care he just wanted me to get out of the hospital.
I do know the symptoms of a stroke and well i had all of them except the one that makes you paraylized on one side or both sides. I was having troubles talking walking breathing vision went a little blurry. I had troubles grabbing things with full strength. Could i plz get a respone via E-mail as for i dont realy like forums besides to ask question then i give my e-mail address.. =:-)

Sincerely, Richard

I had my stroke a year ago (June 20th). The only pain I've ever felt was the IV in my arm and hand in the hospital. The first thing was slurred speech, then trouble with balance. Next was loss of movement in my right side. It's very difficult to describe, but for me it was quite scary because you have no control over certain parts of your body. I've talked to a lot of stroke victims and no two are alike.....some things we all have in common, but no two alike.

My stroke began with severe dizziness and vomiting. So of course I thought I had a bad case of the flu. Left sided tingling and weakness did not begin til 5 hrs. later. Emergency room kept saying I had migraine induced paralysis even though I told them my headache was just normal. Didn't find out until the next day after MRI and MRA that it was a stroke. CT scan did not show stroke when admitting to the ER. My left side didn't srart to droop until next day also. However, the whole time from when I left the house I could not move anything on my left side.

I, too had no pain. I was sitting at a business meeting. I noticed that the left side of my face was numb, like I had been to the dentist. I had some drooling. My partners thought I had been drinking at lunch! My left sided paralysis came later on.

On Feb11, 04, I was at my job as a machinist. I was cutting a bolt with a hack-saw. All of a sudden my eyes crossed. I blinked a few times, I guess to try and straighten them out. I cussed and told the guy standing next to me "something is wrong". Within about 5 seconds everything started to whirl around, unlike any dizziness I had every experienced,(such as too many beers, overboard on a roller coaster ride, etc) I collapsed to the floor and started to vomit violently. The other workers for whatever reason placed me in a chair. I remember very little after that, except some of the workers were telling me "hang in there, Bill". I couldn't talk but I wanted to say "quit yelling into my ear!". There was an immense headache, 10 times worse than any of the other descriptions previously given! All movement made the vertigo worse.
I just learned of this forum and started a separate thread that goes into more detail . It is called "I had a brain-stem stroke ...happy ending. No sense in repeating myself. Thanks.

Me, I wasn't even aware I had a stroke, or even when it happened, but it seems to have only affected my speech that I'm aware of. The same as a previous poster, I sometimes have dyslexic speech. I sometimes say words and mix up the syllables, or say the right words, but not in the right order. As I said, I would never have been aware I had a stroke except for the fact I now have seizures. I had one seizure in my sleep, (thought it was a dream), and 10 days later I had 2 more seizures in the daytime, fully aware and awake, I called 911, (my right hand was still functional), thank god they came, (I couldn't speak). I had a CT scan at the hospital, that's where I was told the seizures were due to a previous stroke. I'm only 52. Ron

During the first one I felt a little sick and my right arm and face went numb. It was mild enough that I foolishly ignored it.
The second was like an uber migraine where the aura never went away (until a few months later)
The third one was tired, dizzy, cold, light headed, low blood pressure, very high heart rate, weakness, and walking like I was intoxicated. I actually thought it was pretty funny until a few hours later when it kept getting worse.
The fourth, on the other hand, scared the heck out of me. I don't actually remember much of it, just that I was 80% sure that I was dying. Luckily it largely cleared up within a few minutes and the only lasting effects were just and increase of the symptoms listed above. It actually just might have been a TIA that shocked my system, making my preexisting symptoms worse.

My husband had a left brain stroke on Christmas day 2005. I don't know what the stroke felt like, but I can say after more than 2 years I am very grateful for the part of my husband I still have. He still has no use of his right arm or hand, right foot or leg, speaks very little that can be understood, but.............he is able to assist in his own dressing and bathing, by use of an afo leg brace, he can transfer with minimal to moderate assist, feed himself, swallows well and has regained a great deal of his mental clarity, operates his motorized wheel chair and still gets his opinions across. Our communication is interesting consisting of questions, pointing, many "pessisis" and oh s---ts. Our communication is probably about 80%-when I don't get it, I no longer cry or dwell on it. I simply say-I'm just not getting it now-maybe later.
He has on going pain issues (nerve pain according to the doctors)-I treat the pain for a day or two and it goes away for awhile.
For sure our lives are different than before, but we still have so many good parts.

I HAD MY STROKE IN FEB 02. I WAS SITTING AT MY DESK TYPING AND EVERYTHING STARTED TURNING GRAY IN COLOR. I SAID TO MY CO-WORKER SOMETHING IS HAPPENING AND I CAN'T STOP IT. THAT IS ALL I REMEMBER UNTIL I WOKE UP IN THE HOSPITAL AND HEARD THE NURSES SAYING CVA IN PROGRESS. I THOUGHT WHAT IS CVA. I ALSO HEARD THEM SAYING MY BLOOD PRESSURE WAS 225 OVER 175. THEY PUT 2 OF THEM LITTLE TINY WHITE PILLS IN MY MOUTH AND I TRIED MY BEST TO SPIT THEM OUT BECAUSE THE BURNED SO BAD. HOWEVER, THE NURSE TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE TO BRING MY PRESSURE DOWN QUICK. I WAS IN HOSP FOR 4 DAYS.

SO YOU SEE 9 OUT 10 TIMES THERE IS NO PAIN AND IF YOU ARE NOT AWARE OF THE SIGNS OF A STROKE YOU WILL NEVER KNOW YOU HAVE / HAD A STROKE.

BEFORE I HAD MY STROKE IN FEB 02, I USED TO HAVE NUMBNESS IN MY RIGHT LEG AND ARM ALL THE TIME. I THOUGHT I WAS JUST TIRED SO I WOULD GO SOME WHERE AND RELAX / REST. LITTLE DID I KNOW THOSE WERE MINI STROKES. SO, MY DEAR DR. SAID TO ME WHY HAVE YOU NOT TOLD ME THJIS BEFORE AND LIKE I SAID I THOUGHT I WAS JUST TIRED.

FOR THE NEXT 2 YEARS I WAS IN THE HOSP EVERY OTHER MONTH WITH NUMBNESS ON MY RIGHT SIDE. I GOT TO THE POINT WHERE I STOP SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT THEM. MY. DR, WAS FURIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WITH ME.

HOWEVER, THANKS TO GOD I AM DOING VERY WELL AND HAVE A LOT OF MY USAGE BACK. I JUST GET TIRED VERY EASILY ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND I GET EVIL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I THANK GOD FOR A VERY SWEET AND LOVING HUSBAND.

I thought I was having a severe food allergic reaction. I had violent vomiting and dizziness and felt like passing out twice. I slept on the bathroom floor that night because I couldn't stop feeling sick to my stomach. The next morning I woke up with a really nasty headache that wouldn't go away and my speech was slightly slurred. Luckily my sister insisted that I call my doctor because if I had been alone, I would probably taken a lot of aspirin for the headache.

I can't say that my stroke felt like much of anything except weird. I was walking through a crowded bar and then boom I tripped and fell. I figured I had tripped over someone's feet, but actually my left leg just gave out. My primary feeling at the time was embarrassment, having fallen down in such a public place.

I didn't have any pain when I had my stroke at the current age of 33. The first time believed to have been a stroke, I had been sick for 3 weeks with 103.1 temp and constant headaches. I went over to my next door neighbors house "happens to be a nurse" and said I didn't feel well and felt very weak. I wasn't at her house for 5 mins and started to have trouble breathing and got really hot. I said, " I think you need to call someone". She called 911 and the ambulance took me away for reasons of not being able to breathe and the weakness, along with being a fog. They all thought it was associated with the sickness. They took me to the hospital, did a chest xray and didn't find anything and sent me on my way home to "feel better".

That friday at work, I was talking to the foreman in the shop and all of a sudden my speach was slured and he asked me "is something wrong"? I said, " I don't know why I'm talking like this". He said, are you sure you're ok because the side of your face is drooping. I said, "what are you talking about?" I went to the bathroom and didn't see anything. He came to the bathroom and asked me if I wanted him to call someone. I said, no no, I'm fine, not realizing I just had a stroke. I worked the rest of the day not realizing what had happened. I just happen to have had an appointment with my psyc who perscribed a drug called Vyvanse "for A.D.D. On my way to see him, I couldn't drive very well, and just attributed it to the side effects to the medication. My car ended up brushing against another car as I was driving but didn't even realize what had happened. I got to my doctors office and told him what had happened more in detail. He pushed it off as he thought he had read that those were side effects to the medication. He took me off of that and put me on a different med.

The next day I took Focalin, "my normal A.D.D. med that I had been on for the past 2 years with no issues. Later that evening I was at my next door neighbors house again with my wife and mother-in-law who was also a nurse. I started getting that hot feeling again and told my wife I wanted to go home. When I said that, I said it with my voice sluring and then she said, "stop talking like that" I said, "i cnt hep it, dis is da way i wa talkin at werk"

They now say they knew something wasn't right and could see the drooping in my face and ended up having to help me walk back to my house. I had no idea what was going on and I vaugely remember them helping me back to my house. I remember lying down and saying that I couldn't feel anything on the left side hand and arm. My fingers and forearm were numb and kinda felt paralyzed. My wife called our internest and she said to get me to the hospital because she didn't like what was happening. I found out later that they should have just called 911 instead of just driving me. The doctor said I'm admiting him into the hospital. I still had no idea what was going on. The next thing I knew they did a CAT scan and the E.R. doc came back and said I had a stroke. From there they admitted me into a room and was in the hospital for 4 days.

I hate to resurrect a dead thread, but perhaps you might be able to answer a quick question:

Is there any way to tell if you have ever had a stroke (and not known what is was or thought it was a seizure)? Without going into detail I have had 5 stoke-like experiences, only without residual paralysis. Only one of them was ever treated/my doctor knows about it; and the hospital staff assumed I had a seizure. If I got a CT could it reveal that I have ever had one?

I had a very jolting pain yesterday, like 20 knives sticking me in my middle left back. I got up and walked it off in one minute. The left side of my body felt a little numb but went away in 2 hours, I still have a slight headache this morning.

Reading these posts, 9 out of 10 strokes have no pain? I thinking this was a pinched nerve? I can't stand to go to the hospital/emergency it would have made me more jittery and maybe another pinched nerve?

I have Diabetes, high blood pressure, but this is in very good control.

Any thoughts? please? thanks.

Al

Hi, wanted to talk to you about your carotid artery surgery. I had the same operation in 2005 on left carotid.. my neck hurts, I also have a red rash around my neck.. my jaw feels funny.. and to top it all off now they tell me the same artery is 100% blocked! So how did that happen?? every time I had it checked after surgery I was told blockage was 50 to 80% .. that it was scar tissue perhaps.. blah blah blah.. now I am so blocked nothing can be done.. I am so freaking mad.. The surgery left feeling surreal.. like my life changed and I am no longer sure who I am sometimes.. kind of hard to explain.. it is a strange thing.. you are the first I have spoken to about this.. it would be great to hear from you.. I hope you are doing well.. I am not sure how long ago you posted on this american stroke ass. site.. but do hope to hear from you. sunflowerzelda45@yahoo.com :)
