Hi,I hope Iam posting this in the right catagory, anyway, I am 23 years old, I have bipoler schizo-afective disorder and have been perscribed Seroquel and Lithium for 6 years. I have been depressed for years and up until a couple of months ago I was sleeping 16 + hours a night/day with very little exercise. I was given ritilan a few months ago and got jolted out of my depression and begin normal sleeping hours and agressive exersise routines. Note I have been having chest pains for more than a year and was an atenolol which i had to get off because my heart rate was as low as 43 beats per minute. Shortly after I added running to my exercise I devoloped a vibration in the left side of my chest that comes and goes as well as palpatations, and more frequent chest pain.I think I may have come close to fainting a couple of times. I have been to the emergency room several times, had an ekg, ecg, 24 hour holter moniter, and a stress test. I have never had these symptoms during these tests and everything as far as i know was fine. I also seem to be fine during exersise. Because of my schizo-effective disorder, these symtpoms are hard to handle and are destroying me, everyday I feel I am going to die, and this anxiety is stopping me from functining. Most doctors dont take me seriously because I am only 23, What kind of tests can be done to help me understand what the problem is? Can my Psych Meds be the Problem?

I am having vibrations in my chest too. I have been to the emergency room twice..those were due to anxiety attacks (which i didn't know the first time). I went the second time i went i couldn't help it--i just had this overwhelming sense that i would just die if i didn't go-there was no way to convice myself. I had an EKG they said i was just fine and sent me home....sometimes they feel normal. I feel shaky, adrenaline kicks in, heart pounds, feel scared and cold, teeth chattering...lasts a few minutes then back to normaI. BUT sometimes after one it's like i won't come all they way back down and it is soo uncomfortable-vibrations, can't sleep well, feeling like i have to go to the bathroom, twitches in stomach....????I kept having these "episodes" for weeks...i had to stop exercising all together because when my heart rate would go up it would trigger the whole reaction. After months i worked back up to where i could run again--but just yesterday i almost had another attack---but it didn't get full fledged and i just have some vibrations..

I was given medicine like that too..Straterra tho. I had the similar reaction of feeling jolted out of a mood. I felt great really, but it did increase my heart rate and i had occasional fluttering in my heart. I had always felt kind of sluggish throughout highschool...and i had a heart rate of about 60. It just made me feel more awake, alert, and without fog. I liked it but after it kept giving me headaches and making my hair start falling out i quit taking it. 2005. My average heart rate has never gone down...about 80 bpm now.

umm i don't know what to do... and i can't afford to jump around from dr. to dr.

I have the same symptom. It only happens when I am about to go to sleep. It feels like my blood and all my insides are vibrating, mostly located in my chest area. The only thing that stops it is taking a drink of something, anything, then it stops. It's kind of scary. I haven't been to the dr. yet, but I will have to soon to see what the heck is wrong. I thougt maybe it was due to high cholestrol or plaque in the arteries.

Hi Eustress-
So sorry to hear about all your struggles. My girlfriend is 19 and suffers from schzo-affective and severe depression. I am witness to just how much this ruins her life at times. Although she doesn't suffer from heart palpitations, I do, and let me just say how sorry I am that you have to deal with both of this incredibly challenging problems. Props to you for continuing on with your life. Just out of curiosity, would you mind telling me what meds you're on, aside from the lithium and seroquel? Are you an anything like abilify? or anything for the schizo affecive? I find it incredibly interesting that your doctor put you on ridilin and that that helped, as my girlfriend had the same experience with concerta. I'm quite convinced that schizo affective and ADD are connected. Do you suffer from depersonalization/disassosiation?
ANyways just some background stuff. I'm really interested in that aspect of it. As far as the heart palpitations are concerned, this can be incredibly difficult and scary, as you can see from all of the posts on this site! Hang in there. And keep searching for answers if you can't find what you're looking for. It sounds like you're in good hands, but don't let your doctors pass you off as a hypocondriac because of your psychiatric history! It happens everytime my girlfriend gets sick! I take ativan, as needed, to keep my anxiety in check when the palpitations get out of hand, but be careful as this stuff can be incredibly addictive. Also, it is quite possible that the ritilan is responsible for the palpitations, as this is a stimulant. You could try switching medications to another ADD med. Keep hanging tough. You're in a tight spot and I know what you must be going through. Talk to your psychiatrist about switching to another ADD med if you feel the ritilan and the palpitations came around the same time. Concerta seems to work nicely for my girlfriend, but it is habit forming, so be careful of that as well...
And please, don't let the doctors treat everything you have as a psych disorder, just because you're schitzo affective. That doesn't make you a hypocondriac! I am not bipolar or even depressed, and I am an extreme hypocondraic, and my poor girlfriend gets blown off at the hospital far worse than I do.
Best of luck. I admire your strength. If there's anything I can do, let me know.
PS- As far as some more tests go, the most thorough tests would be another EKG, a halter moniter or event monitor (lasting from a day to months) and an echocardiogram. Also, a chest xray doesn't hurt, as does blood word with cardiac enzymes (just checks your electrolytes, and most importantly, checks to see if there has been any damage to the heart already). Also, I am aware that lithium CAN cause heart problems (rarely) so bring this up to your psychiatrist as well, as they may know more about lithium than your cardiologist. Try to get all of your doctors in on things together, although I know how hard this can be.

I may know what you have I had it. Its called A Typical Chest Pains. Caused when the muscles behind the chest walls push against the chest. Don't worry nothing bad can become of this in fact they say it mostly affects smaller skinnier people. try to get your doctor to prescribe you some skelaxin witch is a muscle relaxer he will tell you to take so many so much every day but what you should do is use these when the vibrations or palpitations start. Check with your doctor but 800mg Ibuprofen 3 times a day till the discomfort has sub sided than just take in the morning or afternoon after that. The Ibuprofen profine has mild muscle relaxers and pain killers in it. Now to talk about the cause my #1 was stress and if your older than 16 you have ADHD get put on adderol not Ridilin because Ridilin is like crack for older people and its not good to mix Seroquel, lithium and Ridilin that is like drinking a bottle of asprin with a bottle of whisky you need a stress reliever like citalopram with the adderol. Well i hope I can be of some help to you and all the info i gave you is the information i got for my personal self from my doctor and I was like you in fact i rushed myself to a hospital thinking i was having a heart attack or stroke. and that made me more stressed worrying about it and it was all due to the fact i had a new family home job car bills kid and it didn't happen over night but it was the stress that was building up in me and my muscles were allways tense and my bones would crack and pop. But after about 5 months i finally found a good doctor and he really helped me. I seen this page and only wanted to express what i went through this letter should not be used as a medical treatment please allways consult a doctor before taking any drugs and or self medicating. I hope that one day you will feel better. allways believe you do have the power to overcome any challenge in your way but you must believe the challenge and challenge your beliefs.
